The National Association of Women Judges Uganda (NAWJU) in partnership with the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) is holding multi sectoral trainings on labour trafficking at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
Under the theme, "Women Judges Leading Efforts to Improve Justice Sector Effectiveness in Combating Trafficking. The first bit of the training is from 25 to 26th August and the second leg will be from 1st to 2nd September.
The training which was moderated by Hon. Lady Justice Jane Alividza, the Vice president of NAWJU, brought on board prosecutors, police, Judges and Magistrates plus defense counsel.
The trainers included president of NAWJU, Hon. Lady Justice Henrietta Wolayo, Publicity Secretary, HW Stella Amabilis and NAWJU member HW Christine Turibamwe. In attendance were representatives from IAWJ.
Retired Hon. Lady Justice Elizabeth Nahamya was in attendance as an observer. She is scheduled to be part of the trainers during the September session.
The training is looking at a number of aspects such as; victim-centered courts and victim-centered justice processes, trauma informed courts and Trauma informed systems, identifying TIP victims and not charging, / prosecuting/ convicting them as criminals, child domestic servitude as labor trafficking and disabled children recruited for forced begging.
The participants also were given copies of the Uganda Judicial Bench Book on Trafficking in Persons and the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2009 and Regulations 2019.
